Vulnerable group: children, families at risk
Human rights category: #parentalrights
Spanish authorities have decided to take into the state’s custody two Romanian children living in Spain. At the time, they were being cared for by their maternal grandmother, as their mother was temporarily in Romania and their father in prison. Romanian authorities have repeatedly asked for the repatriation of the children so they could be entrusted to their paternal grandparents who meet all the criteria for raising them, but to no avail. At the moment the two spouses are living in Bistrița-Năsăud County, where the father is working. The mother frequently travels to Spain in order to stay in touch with her children. On one of those trips she gave birth to her third child, who was also taken by the authorities immediately after that. The Spanish social service refuses to give a reason for keeping the children in the country and have not given the grounds for their intervention.
Pro Bono Attorney at Law Ioan Someşan is helping the family with legal aid on the matter.
