Vulnerable group: refugees
Human rights area: acquisition of citizenship
A new case was taken over through The Pro Bono Network for Human Rights. It concerns a family of Ukrainian origin, whose members are currently refugees in Bulgaria. The person contacted us because she needs legal assistance to see if there is a possibility for her husband to acquire Romanian citizenship through repatriation, as he is of Bessarabian origin. Other details that could be helpful in this endeavor would be the fact that the husband's grandfather was born in 1912 in Bessarabia (village of Mologa), studied at a Romanian school, served in the Romanian Navy in the mid-30s. They have only one document about his death, the rest of the information has to be reconstructed through state archives in Ukraine and perhaps Romania, according to the applicant. In an attempt to seek legal advice from various agencies about regaining citizenship, they were told that this process is only possible for people born between 1918 and 1940. Thus, they sought legal advice on how the repatriation law applied to people who were born in 1912 and were young children when the Romanian state came to Bessarabia in 1918.
The case was taken over by lawyer Luminița Chiriac (Iași Bar) towhom we thank and wish a lot of success in solving the case!
