Case #129: Intersectional discrimination in accessing banking services

Vulnerable group: roma people

Human rights area: discrimination (criterion: Roma ethnicity, level of education)

A new case was taken over through The Pro Bono Network for Human Rights. It is about a Roma man who, trying to open a salary account at a banking institution, was refused on the grounds that he "cannot read and write", so it was impossible for him to open his account at the bank with which the company where he is employed works. The support person who contacted us on his behalf told us that, following what he had heard, he asked to speak to the branch clerk and she told him that she had passed on the request to the branch manager and that it had not been approved. He was also told that the bank in question has this aspect of opening accounts for illiterate persons in its policy. The gentleman sought legal advice to file a petition with the CNCD.

The case was taken over by lawyer Eva Rossler Doczy (Harghita Bar) towhom we thank and wish a lot of success in solving the case!
