"Strategic Human Rights Cases. Justice in Support of the Citizen"- Official Launch of the project INTEGRIS: Integrated Support for Human Rights

On the occasion of European Pro Bono Week*, on November 25th, 2021, ACTEDO and the Center for Legal Resources (CRJ), with the support of ACCEPT, ANAIS and The Pro Bono Network for Human Rights, officially launched the project INTEGRIS: Integrated Support for Human Rights, with an online event called:

Strategic Human Rights Cases. Justice in Support of the Citizen

The event tackled interesting cases from various areas of human rights - domestic violence, disability and LGBTQ rights - which made use of strategic litigation and pro bono legal work in order to defend fundamental rights. Three special guests presented the efforts of non-governmental organizations and individuals in Romanian courts and at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to call for legislative changes to protect vulnerable people and achieve equal rights for all citizens. Specifically, the event presented the following:

  1. The Center for Legal Resources for Valentin Câmpeanu v. Romania - the first case admitted to the ECHR of a non-governmental organization on behalf of a person with disabilities, who died in state custody. What (did not) change 17 years after the death of the young man with multiple disabilities and vulnerabilities. | Georgiana Iorgulescu, Executive Director of the Center for Legal Resources (CLR)
  2. Cases that have led to legislative changes in the field of domestic violence. Advocacy of civil society to improve the protection of survivors of violence: the provisional protection order, victims' right to interpretation and translation | Giulia Crișan, Lawyer, Bucharest Bar & Consultant for ANAIS Association
  3. Buhuceanu and Ciobotaru v. Romania: 21 LGBTI families accuse the Romanian state of discrimination at the ECHR because Romania violates their right to recognition and legal protection | Teodora Ion-Rotaru, Executive Director of the ACCEPT Romania Association

The event is part of the project INTEGRIS: Integrated Support for Human Rights, developed by the Equality and Human Rights Action Centre (ACTEDO), in partnership with the Center for Legal Resources (CLR), with the financial support of Active Citizens Fund Romania, program funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants 2014-2021.
